Date

2026-01-22

America/Los_Angeles

One week down with PGA Sony Hawaii Open in the rear-view mirror & with the rest of 2026 to go! After a traditional, full-field, 36-hole-cut event, we move to the PGA American Express, a 3 course Pro Am with a cut after 54-holes.

This week rather than the typical top 30 players in the world, the PGA American Express will feature 12 of the world’s top 25, including 5 of the top 10 and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler will make it very interesting in his 1st game back since the Hero World challenge in December.

Rather than one course, we have three this week.

The host course is the Pete Dye Stadium Course at PGA West & it will be supported by the Nicklaus Tournament Course (also at PGA West) and La Quinta Country Club. The entire field will get 1 round at each of the 3 courses, then the cut will be made to the top 65 & ties, with the final round will take place at the Pete Dye Stadium Course.

The courses, Nicklaus and Dye will feature poa overseed on the greens, while La Quinta will be a poa ryegrass overseed blend. All 3 courses will have rye grass overseed through the rest of the course.

The Courses-

All Par 72

Pete Dye Stadium course (SC) 7,200 yards

Nicklaus tournament course (NT) 7,100 yards

La Quinta (LC) 7,034 yards

  • 4 x par 5s
  • 10 x par 4s
  • 4 x par 3s

Player’s ball striking & putting will be rewarded around all 3 courses with the toughest of the 3 being the Pete Dye stadium course, known for significant water hazards, numerous bunkers & challenging green complexes, including the famous island green 17th hole, designed to penalize mistakes.

Player skills suited in California-

  • Driving Accuracy
  • Approach on green
  • Higher than 70% GIR
  • Putting for birdies

STAKING: At PGT, we apply a strict and consistent staking strategy to every tip we publish. All published results on our site are calculated on the basis of one (1) unit per tip, unless otherwise stated. The actual dollar value of a unit (if any) is determined by each individual — it may be for a no-value bet with a friend, or $5 or $50. This methodology is for record-keeping and educational purposes only and is not a recommendation to bet or to bet in any particular way.
Competitor Tip Type Odds Units Result Rationale
Scottie Scheffler Win 4.7/1(+470) 1.00 WIN
  • 1st x SG: T2G- Tee to Green
  • 2nd x SG: OTT- Off the Tee
  • 1st x SG: APG- Approach the green
  • 16th x SG: ARG- Around the green

  • 100% make cut in 2025
  • 100% top 25 in 2025
  • 67.99 stroke average
  • 19 x PGA Wins

#1 player Scott Scheffler needs no full summary he had a stellar 2025 with his 6 x wins including 2 majors he is around $4.70 on betfair, he did open @ $4.20. He is the deserving favourite.

Russell Henley Win 29/1(+2900) 1.00 LOSS

Russell Henley

  • 6th x SG: T2G
  • 93rd x SG: OTT
  • 13th x SG: APG
  • 7th x SG: ARG
  • 47th x SG: PUT
  • 68.65% GIR
  • 68% DA
  • 89.5% made cuts in 2025
  • 68.4% top 25 in 2025
  • 69.32 stroke avg
  • 5 x PGA Wins

We are backing up on RH from Hawaii where he looked flat or was, he merely warming up for here, always hard to know despite watching many interviews about his game.

In Hawaii he 65, 73, 67, 67 for his T19 @ -8 & no doubt his 73 on day 2 was responsible for the pass result, we do like his finishing 65, 65.

At Hawaii he was still 5th overall on approach with +5.17 strokes gained & 28th in putting with many better known putters struggling, it was also RHs first hit out since the Hero world challenge so he should have sorted out any swing problems off the tee through the week into here.

Another like RM who has remained very firm in the market & @ $29 is also fair considering he was very short @ $12.50, this field is much stronger but this is fair odds considering he should be challenging at some point over the 72 holes.

Robert MacIntyre Win 30/1(+3000) 1.00 LOSS
  • 30th x SG: T2G
  • 52nd x SG: OTT
  • 40th x SG: APG
  • 60th x SG: ARG
  • 39th x SG: PUT
  • 68.65% GIR
  • 61.48% DA
  • 91.3% make cut in 2025
  • 47.8% top 25 in 2025
  • 69.54   stroke avg
  • 2 x PGA Wins

The Scot had a good 2025 ending with a 12th @ Hero world challenge with a commendable -11, RM started 2026 well in Hawaii with a strong closing T4 where he had a bogey free 63 on the final day to round out with -12.

He is fair odds around $30 on betfair after opening @ $28 so he has been firm throughout.

Patrick Cantlay Win 42/1(+4200) 1.00 LOSS
  • 15th x SG: T2G
  • 38th x SG: OTT
  • 15th x SG: APG
  • 79th x SG: ARG
  • 63rd x SG: PUT
  • 70.05% GIR
  • BTA driving accuracy- tour avg =60.64% in 2025 & 59.86% so far 2026
  • 85% made cuts in 2025
  • 50% top 25 in 2025
  • 69.81 stroke avg
  • 8 x PGA Wins

This is Cantlay's first event for 2026 & his first since the PGA Procore Championships in mid-September 2025. He has been playing for Atlanta drive GC team in the TGL so he has looked sharp indoors.

His best finish late in 2025 season was the very good 2nd overall @ PGA TOUR Championship where he was in contention to win until his final 71 meant he finished T2 with Russell Henley, his overall -15 was a good effort.

With 2026 season I am sure he will be looking to shine early as the time he took off in late 2025 was for a long term back injury, he has looked loose competing on the TGL & here he is @ $42 after opening @ $38, considering he is ranked #27 in OWGR but he generally is considered a T10 in the world. It's a fair price but you could try & get matched around $48.

Sam Burns Win 44/1(+4400) 1.00 LOSS
  • 107th x SG: T2G
  • 71st x SG: OTT
  • 127th x SG: APG
  • 94th x SG: ARG
  • 1st x SG: PUT
  • 66.08% GIR
  • BTA x DA
  • 88% made cuts in 2025
  • 52% top 25 in 2025
  • 69.59 stroke avg
  • 5 x PGA Wins

We @ PGT are excited to see what 2026 holds for the #1 putter on PGA tour and possibly in the world. After a very consistent back end of 2025 where he made 17 straight cuts with 11 of those in the Top 20, his best result in that run was a 2nd in a playoff only to Ryan Fox @ the RBC Canadian Open in June.

The most pleasing was his improvement in his driving, despite being below the tour avg for accuracy he still was in positive strokes gained in 14 of the last 17 events off the tee.

With his improved game overall look for SB to challenge more in 2026 & it would be fitting he start here @ $44 on betfair, he could be the value around $50 as he is the best putter in this field, if he can get going, he can bag some birdies where others struggle.

Matt Fitzpatrick Win 50/1(+5000) 1.00 LOSS
  • 62nd x SG: T2G
  • 82nd x SG: OTT
  • 76th x SG: APG
  • 63rd x SG: ARG
  • 30th x SG: PUT
  • 66.74% GIR
  • 61.29% DA
  • 80.9% made cuts in 2025
  • 47.6% top 25 in 2025
  • 70.08 stroke avg
  • 2 x PGA Wins

The Englishman really got moving with his complete overall game from the middle of 2025. It started in mid-May at the MAJOR, PGA Championship where he was positive strokes in all SG metrics and finished T8.

In his run of 16 straight cuts including the PGA Championships he had 9 x Top 10 results with 5 of those as Top 5 finishes culminating in his Win @ DPWT Championship in November 2025 defeating none other than goliath Rory McIlroy in a playoff after both finished well with -18.

MF has been warming up nicely playing for NYGC in the TGL, he has never looked better so he can improve on his lone win in the PGA in 2026, he has won 9 on the DP World tour as well.

Another I think is value @ $50 on betfair, MF did open around $46 & he did drift out to $60 before firming back in, if you can get that $55 to $60 that is terrific value.

Sepp Straka Win 65/1(+6500) 1.00 LOSS
  • 18th x SG: T2G
  • 52nd x SG: OTT
  • 7th x SG: APG
  • 119th x SG: ARG
  • 41st x SG: PUT
  • 70.18% GIR
  • 65.66% DA
  • 81.8% made cuts in 2025
  • 59.1% top 25 in 2025
  • 69.46 stroke avg
  • 4 x PGA Wins

I often say we @ PGT discovered Sepp as we had him once @ $700 to win, he finished T2 from memory and the rest is history since he started a big 2024, his first win came back @ PGA Honda Classic in 2022, he won in 2024 & 2 more PGA wins in 2025.

SS is the defending American Express winner having put his foot down after 36 holes with a 64 (-8) then following that up after 54 holes with another 64 (-8) to end the event with 70 (-2) & although that was his worse day over 4 days he still held a 2 shot lead and the rest were a further 3 & 5 shots adrift.

The 3 courses are not easy because you cannot just dial in & improve day to day, it's a race each individual day, the more birdies the better & SS is not one of the better putters in this line up but like 30% in the PGA he can hold his own, his approach play very good, he just needs to focus on his around the greens play & he can defend the 2025 title well.

After a break of 14 weeks, he resumed in brilliant fashion in early December 2025 @ the PGA Hero world challenge with a stirring 3rd with -21 after a consistent showing on all 4 days with 66, 69, 64 & 68, that will put him into contention here.

Currently @ $65 & drifting on betfair after opening as low as $50 which is puzzling as he knows the course and resumed in fine style in December, the start all important for not only SS but the field.

His game went to a new level in 2025.

Ryan Gerard Win 70/1(+7000) 1.00 LOSS
  • 28th x SG: T2G
  • 67th x SG: OTT
  • 26th x SG: APG
  • 75th x SG: ARG
  • 154th x SG: PUT
  • 65.76% GIR
  • 63.38% DA
  • 82.7% made cuts in 2025 & 100% in 2026
  • 34.5% top 25 in 2025 + 1 x 2nd in 2026
  • 70.07 stroke avg
  • 1 x PGA Win

RG was our late mail last week in Hawaii and he only was beaten by a red-hot Chris Gotterup on the final day. RG with his terrific 2nd was still excellent in chasing down Gotterup as RG produced 5 birdies on the last 10 holes.

Whilst RG was sent out as late mail @ $22 on betfair he was at the halfway mark-

  • 1st x SG: T2G with +5.42 strokes gained total
  • 1st x SG: APG with +3.82 strokes gained

This week in California he brings some solid form with 2 x 2nds at his last event and in our honest opinion he could be the next Ben Griffin, who did let us down in Hawaii. Expect a good solid result this week again from RG, even though we have for the Win this line up is stronger than both Mauritius & Hawaii so you could cover the play with a T10 or T20 finish, we would love to see him win & currently around $70 on betfair & very firm in betting.

Daniel Berger Win 75/1(+7500) 1.00 LOSS
  • 27th x SG: T2G
  • 17th x SG: OTT
  • 27th x SG: APG
  • 150th x SG: ARG
  • 135th x SG: ARG
  • 68.21% GIR
  • 66.42% Driving accuracy
  • 81.8% made cuts in 2025
  • 40.9% top 25 in 2025
  • 70.29 stroke avg
  • 4 x PGA Wins

A player that struggles to reach his potential on the PGA due to numerous injuries in his career. It was great to see him get into the thick of it at last week's PGA Sony Open in Hawaii with his T6 with -11.

The Stig & MJ think Robert Macintyre is a chance so DB has to be considered as he only finished 1 shot behind RB & he equalled winner Chris Gotterup with a final 64 (-6) but what really stood out is his putting stats, it is often apart of his game that suffers due to a niggling finger & wrist injury in 2025.

In Hawaii he was good on day 4 with 8 x birdies & 2 bogeys & 18th overall in putting.

In 2025 before his injury he started in early February on a run of 7 straight events all in positive strokes in all SG metrics including putting, in the run that finished in late April @ the PGA RBC Heritage he finished T2 X 2 & 1 x 3rd, his run continued with 10 straight cuts made, he started having injuries with his wrist & finger from April onwards.

He & like everyone else welcome his return to form, DB is currently around $75 after drifting from his opening $65, he may get to +$80 but he is a chance if he can repeat the Hawaii form, he is one of our lesser hopes.

Akshay Bhatia Win 85/1(+8500) 1.00 LOSS
  • 57th x SG: T2G
  • 103rd x SG: OTT
  • 14th x SG: APG
  • 162ND x SG: ARG
  • 35th x SG: PUT
  • 67.5% GIR
  • BTA- below tour avg in driving accuracy
  • 73.1% made cuts in 2025
  • 38.5% top 25 in 2025
  • 69.89 stroke avg
  • 2 x PGA Wins

The Stig & I have had many discussions on what kind of AB we will get in California? AB is a lefty so of course some courses just do not suit lefties in regard to fairway dog legs & he is known to go far off the fairway with his tee shots, why he sits below the tour avg for driving accuracy.

He has shown in his recent good result of 14th @ PGA Hero World challenge in December that when he gets his driving right, he can compete always-

  • Driving Accuracy @ 73.08% with (38 of 53 fairways found) T16 overall.

That is terrific form for this and when he has won events he also has his DA in check around 65% to 67%, again very good for him as the tour avg is 60.64% in 2025.

AB has good other stats in most SG metrics, the driving is his obvious Achilles heel so much will depend on how he is off the tee in California.

To be fair he is still only 23 yrs of age with 2 x PGA wins + countless 2nds since turning pro in 2019 at the age of 17.

Throughout 2025 he has led many events after 18 & 36 holes, he really needs to start well in this line up & being 23 yrs of age his confidence grows of course when playing well.

There was plenty of $130 to $150 on offer for Bhatia yesterday on betfair. He is currently @ $85, I would suggest waiting as there is still plenty of time as tee off is not until Friday 3:30am AEDT.

J.T. Poston Win 120/1(+12000) 1.00 LOSS
  • 52nd x SG: T2G
  • 68th x SG: OTT
  • 87th x SG: APG
  • 35th x SG: ARG
  • 89th x SG: PUT
  • 66.18% GIR
  • 66.15% DA
  • 84.6% made cuts in 2025
  • 34.6% top 25 in 2025
  • 70.18 stroke avg
  • 3 x PGA Wins

JT returns to an event where he is known to get Hot, in 2025 he carded a 62 (-10) on day 1 before a levelling 76 (+4) opposites right but day 2 saw him go 4 x bogeys, with 1 double bogey on hole 7.

He bounced back with 64 (-8) on day 3 with 1 x eagle + 7 birdies & only 1 bogey, then followed up with 69 (-3) on day 4. He finished in T12 with Nick Taylor who features in the selections this week after we left him out in Hawaii, for good reason.

Still that T12 was still a -18 (271) and left many wondering, could he have given Sepp a push in 2025?

Of note in the last 3 editions of this event JTs stroke avg is 66.5, if he competes around that he will be in the finish, so despite his overall good results here he has been on a big drift opening @ $80 & out to $120 now on betfair.

Incredible over the odds value.

JT will usually start below $60 for most events.

Nick Taylor Win 130/1(+13000) 1.00 LOSS
  • 42nd x SG: T2G
  • 108th x SG: OTT

  • 79.2% made cuts in 2025 & 100% in 2026
  • 50% top 25 in 2025 & 100% in 2026
  • 69.87 stroke avg
  • 5 x PGA Wins

Saint Nick as we fondly refer to Nick Taylor, he has been kind to us @ PGT with a few wins along the way. We deliberately left him out of Hawaii as I just did not think he is comfortable being a defending champion, he likes a chase a challenge, so he is up to the very best of them when his game is on song.

In Hawaii last week, I watched him on day 4 and like a few he gave up the chase IMO, it showed with only-

  • 2 x birdies
  • 2 x bogeys
  • 14 x pars

He did however end up positive in all strokes gained metrics including his usual strength approach showing +3.91 SG: APG, he was still a pass with putting @ T31 after 72 holes.

We accept his Iron play as good usually so this event with 3 courses suits his style of play & 2025 was a very good year overall, so I expect Saint Nick to carry on in 2026.

Currently another who is on a drift after opening @ $90 on betfair there is plenty around $130 to win outright, we would love to see him stay in touch and make a move after 54 holes.

Wyndham Clark Win 130/1(+13000) 1.00 LOSS
  • 92nd x SG: T2G
  • 84th x SG: OTT
  • 154th x SG: APG
  • 22nd x SG: ARG
  • 66th x SG: PUT

  • 33.3% top 25 in 2025
  • 70.13 stroke avg
  • 3 x PGA Wins

It is very well worth mentioning that WC finally let his ego go and employed swing coach Pat Coyner in a bid to restore his terrific 2023 form which saw him win the MAJOR, US Open + another PGA win before going on and finishing 3rd at the end of year PGA TOUR Championships.

In 2024 we saw him win the AT & T Pebble Beach Pro Am before finishing with a few other 2nds in 2024, when 2025 started WC relied too much on his own mental fortitude & to be fair all athletes including Scott Scheffler have coaches for not only various clubs but performance coaches.

The results in 2025 showed he needed help, towards the end of 2025 we saw the PHOENIX Rising again with-

  • 7 of 10 cuts made
  • 5 of 10 results in T20
  • 2 of the 5 were T10 results

At first glance it does not look impressive but consider he had risen to #10 in OWGR in 2023 and he now sits at #49 in OWGR that is not truly a good reflection of how the middle of 2025 was for him.

We started to see glimpses of his game returning with that T4 @ The OPEN Championships @ Royal Portrush GC in Northern Ireland, not an easy course as it is so challenging being a famous links course.

His T4 @ -11 was with a group of notables who have won multiple events since combined so after returning state side he was a bit lost & temper tantrums showed at various events with poor shots from July to November.

I am sure he was relieved when new swing coach employed showed such a positive turn around in the months leading up to the PGA Hero World challenge with a T8 with rounds of 66, 68, 69, 70 for -15.

It is worth mentioning Chris Gotterup was last (20 only) with even par & above him was Robert Macintyre who was very good last week in Hawaii.

Strangely he opened @ $100 and no support he is currently $130 on betfair.

We all hope he plays well, like he can. His best is clearly good enough, but we want to see a laughing WC, not the temper he is widely known for. Have fun WC and results will follow.

Jason Day Win 140/1(+14000) 1.00 LOSS
  • 66th x SG: T2G
  • 84th x SG: OTT
  • 125th x SG: APG
  • 21st x SG: ARG
  • 58th x SG: PUT
  • 66.04% GIR
  • 61.06% DA
  • 82.4% made cuts in 2025
  • 47.1% top 25 in 2025
  • 70.03 stroke avg
  • 13 x PGA Wins

The Aussie will look at producing a more consistent 2026 than his 2025 efforts that saw him only compete in 16 events.

Not only did he try managing a wrist injury he did have a neck disc herniation which explains a lot of his late 2025.

The question will be how fit & healthy is he?

When he is fit, he is dangerous which showed with a T3 at this event last year after his putter was his only weak SG metric after strong rounds of 64, 66, 67 & 69.

JD is worth the risk regarding his fitness, he arrives 8 weeks fresh into this & I have watched a few videos of him in late December, he looks fit to the eye so around $140 on betfair is worth the risk to reward to find out.
