The 2026 Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches: Tournament Overview
Introduction
The PGA TOUR has made its way to the Sunshine State, kicking off the Florida Swing with the 2026 Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches. This year’s event features a field of 123 players, all set to compete at the renowned PGA National’s Champion Course.
Adjustments to Key Holes
Significant modifications have been made to both the par-4 second and the par-5 18th holes, with newly installed tees extending the course. The second hole is now 20 yards longer, measuring up to 484 yards. Last year, it averaged a score of 4.101 and has not played below par for an entire tournament since 2018. Meanwhile, the finishing 18th hole has been lengthened by 36 yards, now stretching to a formidable 592 yards.
These changes have resulted in a new course-record length of 7,223 yards on the scorecard.
Scoring Opportunities and The Bear Trap
Despite the added distance on the closing hole, the 18th still offers a prime scoring opportunity, serving as the bridge between the infamous “Bear Trap” and the clubhouse. The Bear Trap comprising holes 15, 16, and 17 (a par-3, par-4, and par-3, respectively) has traditionally been a challenging stretch. However, last year, it appeared less daunting, with the field averaging just 0.201 strokes over par collectively.
Recent Tournament History and Scoring Trends
Last year, the course played as a par 71 and yielded an average score of 69.262, over a stroke lower than when it was a par 70 in 2023. Joe Highsmith set a new record with a 19-under 265, surpassing previous marks by Chris Kirk and Austin Eckroat.
